The 2020 Weston Music Festival-Six Feet Apart, Wearing Masks!

2020 Weston Music Festival!

The 2020 Weston Music Festival was blessed to celebrate our second season!   Participants were fortunate to work with outstanding cellist and coach Cornelia Brubeck, and virtuoso violinist and coach, Mei Mei Luo.  In-person sessions included chamber music and ensemble work, masterclasses in violin and cello, technique sessions, classes on fiddle tunes and improvisation.  Online supplements included music theory and listening to wonderful recordings.  YAS! Music director, Dr. David Brubeck, was also on hand to conduct and coach chamber music sessions.

After reviewing the most recent practices, and drawing on our experience presenting concerts at international festivals with distant collaborators, YAS! determined that current technology was insufficient to meet the demands of a chamber music camp, and we decided to meet in person!  After reducing our enrollment by 50%, we trimmed down to two groups, and eight participants.  What a joy to see the light in the young musician’s eyes where there had only been the light of a computer screen.  The rhythms of the familiar returned, as they interacted with music and each other and revivified!

Eight, hand selected violinists and cellists joined the two week camp which featured music as diverse as Piazolla’s “Libertango” and Mozart’s “Duo”, K. 292.  Musical journeys embarked daily from  “The Moldau” of Smetena to Bizet’s “Habanera”.   Participants also enjoyed snack time, and camp manager Ana’s mix of music and trivia.
